While the idea of going to a dealership and talking to a sales person may put knots in your stomach,  you will do well to apply the following points to make the process smoother.

1. Take control of the car buying process by asking lot of questions. Take some time before you go to a dealership to think about what is important to you in buying another vehicle. For instance, you will want to know what fees are being charged in addition to the price, how many miles are on the vehicle, has there been any modifications made to the vehicle, has it been in any prior accidents, etc. You want to have all your questions answered so you can make an informed buying decision.

2. Know what you want in a vehicle before you visit a dealership. Not knowing the vehicle you want could result in making a mistake you will later regret. Salespeople are trained to sell, so if you do not know what you want they will sell you anything. If you are not sure what you want, start with a vehicle and budget in mind and then do some online research. What are others saying about the vehicle? Does it typically have lots of mechanical problems? What do consumer reports have to say? What financing options does the dealership offer or will you have to get your own car loan and where will you get it?

3. Buying a car can also be very exciting and your emotions can easily take over. Do not let emotions take over making reasonable and rational decisions. Just because you have your heart set on a certain vehicle and you are there staring all starry eyed at what appears to be the perfect car, you can't let your emotions blind you to what may be an auto money pit. Many people have paid too much for a vehicle when they have let their emotions run their buying decisions. The key is to remain impartial and see the car for what it is and not what your emotions want you to believe.

4. Dealerships and salespeople are notorious for focusing car buyers on the payments. The reason is, if they can nail down a payment you can agree too, the overall price is removed from the equation. In other words, you can end up paying way more and for a longer term than the car is worth if you only focus on the monthly payments. Stay focused on the price. Do your homework and figure out what you can afford in terms of overall price. You can use the car loan calculator below to get started.

5. By knowing what you want and having all your questions answered you are now in a position to make a decision. That decision will be to close the deal or walk away. This is the time to be very aware of how you are feeling about the deal up to this point and if there is anything inside you that is slightly holding you back, be prepared to walk away. There are lots of vehicles for sale at any given time and if this is not the right deal, there is another one right around the corner.

Buying a car is not always easy but can be a lot of fun when you are prepared. While it is not something most people are highly skilled at, you can definitely be prepared and ready to make a sound buying decision based on your research. So by careful planning and and applying the five points described above, you can buy the  right car at the right price that fits your driving needs and budget.
